We are delighted to have made our own first order with the Fish Society and to report our own experiences.
Straight away we will say that the Fish Society is not the cheapest fish supplier, but is there a reason for that?
The first thing that may surprise you about the Fish Society is that their fish are ALL supplied frozen, but is that REALLY a bad thing? Conventional wiisdom says that freezing fish will affect it and make it an inferior product to fresh fish, but is that true? Fresh fish will continue to deteriorate on a fishmonger shelf until cooked, whereas freah fish when frozen will have any deterioration arrested at point of freezing, meanining that fish will be as fresh as it was at the point of freezing. That is the guiding principle of the Fish Society … that you freeze the finest freshest fish and offer that for sale in prime condition.
Our own test purchase bears that out.
We purchased several items as an individual private consumer :
1pk Razor Clams
1pk Best North Atlantic Prawns
1pk Halibut Fillets
2pks Whitebait (Our kids favourite and a wonderful Tapas idea)
The delivery was contained in a plastic wrapped box which also contained a frozen food type plastic and foil lined bag which probably contained dry ice packing when despatched (the dry ice had evaporated by the time we opened it). The parcel was sent with a next day before 12 noon delivery to us even though 12 noon delivery was not advertised. The literature suggested that the parcel would stay frozen until 7pm on the date of delivery and we have no cause to doubt that.
Unlike other suppliers who clearly buy in boxed product, it was clear that the products that we ordered were purchased wholesale and packaged by the Fish Society indicating keen selection of a premium product. Nowhere was that clearer in our Whitebait purchase …. we have bought Whitebait on many occasions and it is usually a mixed bag of headless fish, indicating lots of movement through the trade .. not so with the Fish Society. The fish that we were supplied were of prime quality and intact.
A light dusting of well seasoned flour and a quick deep fry later and we have a whitebait feast.
We took advantage of a Fish Society discount code to take 10% off our order cost. Check out MyCouponSnipper for any current offers with the Fish Society.
