April is the time of year when the Jersey Royals start to become generally available.
Early in the season they are definitely a premium product, commanding around £6-7/kg (2010 prices) before falling in price.
Waitrose is typically the first mainstream supermarket that brings them instore, perhaps reflecting the premium status that Waitrose enjoys, but other supermarkets will follow suit in the next 2-3 weeks.
We just managed to snaffle the last two packs from our local Waitrose on Sunday and have to say that partnered with some new season lamb chops and lightly steamed samphire, it was a meal fit for a king.
Simple fare, simply cooked and simply delicious … and it wouldn’t have been as appreciated half as much or tasted half as nice if the produce were all available all year round. Respect the seasonality and you will be well rewarded.
