Get ready …. Jersey Royal Potatoes will soon be hitting the shops.
I always get excited about the arrival of Jersey Royal potatoes and there can be no better flavoured potato (at least that I have ever tasted).
Amongst the supermarkets, Waitrose is traditionally the first to have them on display, but at a very expensive price tag representing the scarcity of the first prized crops … don’t be surprised to pay £5 per 500g when they first show … but don’t be afraid to pay it.
The best chefs say that the best meals come from the best produce treated simply, and the Jersey Royals match that criteria admirably. Whether it is their unique micro-climate growing the potatoes on hillsides washed by the sea breeze or the use of seaweed fertiliser we really don’t know, but we wish we could bottle the answer and apply it to our own little patch.
Don’t ever peel or scrape Jersey Royal potatoes as some of the best flavour and nutrient and fibre content will be in or just below the skin.
We leave it to your personal preference, but here we don’t even wash the potatoes although we would knock off any muddy clumps, instead preferring to rapidly boil the potatoes until tender. Any earth will typically be removed from the potatoes by the boiling effect and the small amounts of earth actually improve the overall flavour. (Our Grannies always added a pinch of garden dirt to the potato pot – they taught us that by doing so, we were adding in minerals and flavour necessary for good health and maximum flavour).
As an alternative, you may prefer to lightly wash the potatoes in running water to take away any soil debris and the steam the potatoes until tender. This way you are not leeching minerals, flavour and goodness into a pan of boiling water.
To serve, simply toss the potatoes in a generous knob of butter until the potatoes are glistening, season with some salt and pepper and to serve sprinkle with some chopped chives or spring onions .. or whatever else you fancy e.g. crunchy pancetta and rosemary as in the illustration. Whatever you do though, keep it simple and let the Jersey Royals be king on your plate.
Don’t dally though as the season is short being no more than 2-3 months long. If you miss it you will regret it.
