Food Standards Agency calls for fatter chips

by admin on March 5, 2010

The Telegraph is reporting today that the Nanny State is at work again, trying to change the character of one of Britain’s favourite takeaways – the humble, yet magnificent Fish and Chip supper.

In an attempt to reduce the fat content, the Telegraph states that the FSA has announced plans for a pilot to introduce fatter chips which will in turn reduce the calories count and in particular the calories that are sourced from fats.

Food with Passion can’t believe how far the Government and their agencies will attempt to interfere with free choice. Send messages out to the public by all means that fatter chips are healthier (We already cut our own to 1cm “fat” chips when making at home), but don’t move towards legislation as to how fat a chip should be. There are bigger things to be concerned with.

The simple truth is that for the majority of people, a portion of fish and chips is an occasional treat or a quick alternative to cooking at home. I would be far more concerned about legislation at other fast food outlets to actually display meat content and origins – how much fat is in a Doner Kebab for example and what type of meat is included?

Food with Passion believes that the Food Standards Agency does have a vital role in ensuring integrity in the food chain by ensuring that labelling is accurate and that toxins or other contaminants are kept out of the food chain to keep us all safe. However, meddling in free choice is in a different ball game.

So …. please leave our chippies alone and free to use their own recipes. We eat Fish and Chips from the local chip shop because they do it better than we can at home. Most people don’t have a bank of fryers to serve the family fish and chips at one sitting and welcome the opportunity to use their local fish and chip shop.

We do agree that in general fatter chips are better and we can choose to do that at home … just as we choose our own favourite fish and chip shop. Don’t meddle in our ability to make choices though.
